Dermabrasion is the grandfather of all skin-smoothing procedures. Learning from the skinned knees of childhood, pioneers in plastic surgery experimented in creating a controlled injury on rough, scarred, and otherwise irregular skin.

In dermabrasion, the skin is treated with an abrading instrument to sand away the damaged outer layers. Once healed, the skin is usually smoother and pink, with many irregularities reduced.

Although dermabrasion has been largely replaced by chemical peel procedures, it still has a place as an important skin resurfacing procedure, especially in cases of severe scarring. It is also used in tattoo removal.

Best used on the face, dermabrasion is of limited value in other areas because of the unpredictability of skin healing.

If dermabrasion is being done on a patient with acne, it is imperative that all active eruptions be under control. There can be no open lesions.

Small areas may be treated under local anesthesia while treating larger areas may require a brief general anesthetic. An antibiotic moisturizing ointment that serves as dressing is applied to all treated areas, usually two to three times a day, to avoid a crust buildup.

New skin usually resurfaces the treated area within seven to ten days. The treated area requires conscientious moisturizing and sunscreen protection. Depending on the depth of the treatment, you may experience sensitivity as well as changes in color when exposed to extremes of temperature for as long as a year following dermabrasion.

While not for everyone, dermabrasion offers hope for smoother, healthier skin to those with scar irregularities.
