Skin, once stretched, seldom contracts as much as we’d like. Dermatolipectomy is the surgical removal of excess skin and fat from any area of the body. When skin and fat hang from the abdomen, they form a fold (like an apron). The operation to remove the excess is a Panniculectomy.

Long before the advent of liposuction, plastic surgeons altered body contours by surgically removing excess fat and skin. Even though liposuction is the current body contouring procedure of choice, panniculectomy still has its place. The most obvious area to benefit from this type of operation is the abdomen of patients who have lost large amounts of weight (fifty pounds or more).

The surgical procedure to resect fat and redundant skin from the lower abdomen is called a panniculectomy, from pannus, the Latin word meaning piece of cloth. The terms dermatolipectomy and panniculectomy are often interchanged, but the latter refers exclusively to the operation performed on the abdomen.

The panniculectomy incision is transverse, running from hipbone to hipbone just above the pubic area. Excess skin and fat are cut away and the incision closed. The incision is placed so that it is easily covered by most undergarments. Patients usually return to a desk job seven to ten days after their panniculectomy.

You lost weight but now your skin has stretched leaving you with hanging folds. Panniculectomy may be just what you need to help you show off all that hard work!

There are several alternatives to panniculectomy for abdominal contouring. Refer to the sections on Abdominal Liposuction, Limited Liposuction, Mini-Abdominoplasty, and Abdominoplasty to learn more.
